3 Reasons why negative reviews about your book are useful

Are you an author and have you published a book? Then get ready to receive negative and critical reviews.

You can’t think of pleasing everyone and anyway there are so many people out there who enjoy shooting at zero. But, whatever the reason, one point is certain: all the authors, sooner or later have to face criticism or find in their Amazon account the gift of one-star reviews.

It is inevitable. Indeed, if it hasn’t happened yet, wait for it. Consider it as a rite of passage.

Whether you have already received negative feedback or not, the important thing is to know how to deal with them in the right way to do, even this apparently opposite element, a point to work for your growth as a writer.

When Negative Reviews Are Useless

If you are in your first book you hope your “creature” meets the favor of the public and, even if you don’t like it, you think you don’t deserve negative reviews, because you’ve put all your effort into it, because the text is good, correct, well laid out, and even those who do not appreciate the plot will not fail to recognize your commitment.

Unfortunately it is not so

That review to a star who knows so much about envy and nastiness, who shows he has understood nothing of your book, of what you wanted to say, or that makes you even doubt that whoever wrote it has actually read your book , sooner or later it arrives.

Then better first

First come, first learn to react and manage your emotions in the face of a negative judgment.

The most hateful reviews are those that use destructive phrases like “I gave a star because you could not,” “This is not a book, but a messy heap of twisted thoughts”, “It looks like the diary of a twelve year old”, or ” If I were in the author I would be ashamed to have distributed such nonsense to my name “. And then there are even those who go down even heavier: “Unfortunately being an ebook it can’t even be reused to clean itself in the bathroom”.

What hurts more than this kind of reviews is the fact that they go personal, without talking about the book. The judgments expressed seem more thrown against the author than against the text.

If you happened to receive these criticisms, you most likely felt terribly angry and disappointed.

Angry at the gratuitous nastiness that some people seem to have fun spreading around them, and disappointed by the system that allows everyone to say such offensive and painful things.

Well, the first rule to learn in the face of negative reviews is that the only way to not receive them at all is not to publish anything.

As you have the right and the freedom to publish what you write (and of what you write you assume responsibility!), So also other people have the right and the freedom to express their ideas (and of these they take responsibility !).

So, if you really want to be a writer and want to make your stories known to the world, you have to get involved and stick to its rules.

Publishing a book means getting on a stage to tell a story. If you do this, you must be equally prepared for applause and whistling.

3 Reasons Why Negative Reviews Are Useful

Individual negative reviews that say nothing specific about your book can hurt you and unfortunately it is a useless evil, because it doesn’t help you get better.

These reviews, in fact, don’t make you understand in detail what the reader didn’t like, what’s wrong with your book.

But if the negative reviews should no longer be isolated cases and should instead be repeated similar, then it is the case to stop and think.

And if the reviews say exactly what’s wrong with the text, even better. Take note and humbly accept the judgment of those who read your book.

It may be that, even in this case, the reviews are written in an acid tone and with little tact, but you must separate the form from the content.

The form is due to the disappointment that the reader felt in front of a book that he didn’t like and for which, perhaps, he also spent his money. Think about how you feel yourself when you pay for a service that doesn’t satisfy you. When you are disappointed it is normal to express yourself with little diplomacy because you feel cheated.

So skip over the form, don’t dwell on how readers write their reviews, but focus on what they say.

In fact, negative reviews can be useful for at least 3 reasons:

Readers who don’t know you are more objective

If a negative review is an isolated case, you can – perhaps – ignore it, but if more people point out the same flaws in your text, then you have to listen to them.

It would be too easy to dismiss feedback that we don’t like as the opinions of those who don’t know about literature. Readers are not stupid! Indeed, the truth is that readers understand how, for the simple fact that they read. They read many books in addition to yours and can make comparisons.

Furthermore, it would be just as wrong to believe that only those who know you personally can really understand your book. If so, then you should not have published your book, but distributed it privately only to your circle of friends.

The truth is that the most objective judgments are precisely the ones you will receive from those who do not know you. Relatives and friends cannot be sufficiently detached to make an objective judgment on your text or, perhaps, do not have the courage to really express what they think for fear of offending you.

Those who do not know you, on the other hand, do not have these fears and these limits and for this reason his opinion counts more.

Negative criticisms make positive ones more credible

Be honest: what do you think when you see a book on Amazon that has a lot of five-star reviews? Don’t you think that perhaps they are not all true, that they are pumped reviews and that it is impossible for that book not to have, I wonder, even a two-star review?

After all, the readings are a subjective field, what I like may not please you and vice versa, so that a book gets unanimous support seems really strange.

For this reason, be glad to receive some reviews that are not at the top of the score: readers will be more inclined to believe in favorable reviews contained in positive reviews if these are accompanied by some more critical judgments.

Bad reviews make you grow

When reviews say something specific about your text, it’s always good to listen. To hear you say always good is nice, but it doesn’t make you grow as an author. By paying attention to constructive criticism, instead, you can find out what’s wrong with your text and how you can improve.

To hear you say always “good” is nice, but it doesn’t make you better. Constructive criticism, on the other hand, makes you grow as an author.

Do the reviews say your book is full of errors? Make a new proofreading or check that the conversion to ebook format has not generated errors and republishes the correct text.

Does more than one reader say that your book has disappointed his expectations? Ask yourself then if by chance your cover or presentation text cannot be misleading and have deceived readers into believing that the book is about something else or that it is of a different genre. Check the categories in which your book has been inserted, if you can change the cover or at least add one or more sentences to the fourth text to clarify any misunderstandings.

Do some write that the characters are not credible or that the dialogues are poor? Think seriously about these guidelines and try to be objective with your book. If you can, ask a professional editor for help to review and improve it.

If you have written a book, then the criticisms are inevitable, but they can be a tool for personal and stylistic growth.

Therefore, face the negative reviews with great humility.

Lock yourself in your ivory tower thinking you wrote the masterpiece of the century or being a misunderstood talent, it doesn’t make sense and it won’t get you anywhere.

If your text is a masterpiece, it will still have to be decided by the public, you make it so that it is well constructed and well packaged. If you are convinced that you are really talented, then prove it.

Now that I’m done, I ask you a small favor.
